Fucus Vesiculosus
Fucus Vesiculosus commonly known as Bladderwrack is
a type of brown algae (seaweed). The Stem of Fucus Vesiculosus is
used medicinally. Discovered in 1812, this seaweed was the original
source of iodine, and was used extensively to treat goiter, a
swelling of the thyroid gland related to insufficient iodine. In the
1860s, it was claimed that Fucus Vesiculosus, as a thyroid
stimulant, could counter obesity by increasing metabolic rate, and,
since then, it has been featured in numerous weight-loss remedies.
Primary chemical constituents of this plant include mucilage, algin,
mannitol, beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, iodine, bromine, potassium,
volatile oils, and many other minerals.

Benefits of Fucus Vesiculosus
-
Fucus Vesiculosus’s mucilaginous thallus has
long been used to soothe irritated and inflamed tissues in the
body.
- It was also historically used as a bulk-forming laxative.
- People living near oceans or seas have a historically low rate
of hypothyroidism, due, in part, to ingestion of iodine-rich food,
such as
Fucus Vesiculosus.
- It has also been used to counter obesity, possibly due to its
reputation for stimulating the thyroid gland.
- Where obesity is associated with thyroid trouble, Fucus
Vesiculosus may be very helpful in reducing the excess weight
-
Fucus Vesiculosus has a reputation in helping
the relief of rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis, both used
internally and as an external application upon inflamed joints.
- Diet including Fucus Vesiculosis has a link to a lower breast
cancer rate
- Fucus Vesiculosis lowers blood pressure; lessens constipation
and gastro-intestinal ailments and less infectious disease.
- Fucus Vesiculosis provides nutritional support to the nervous
system and heart in the form of iodine, vitamins, minerals and
cell salts.
- Iodine in Fucus Vesiculosis also helps to maintain a healthy
thyroid, thereby significantly reducing one major possible cause
of obesity.
- In addition, Fucus Vesiculosis increases the body's ability to
burn off fat through exercise. Thus, stamina is boosted, allowing
cells to consume energy more efficiently. Bladderwrack has also
been shown to support the lowering of blood cholesterol levels.
